India’s 78th Independence Day: Karmapa’s message
On the occasion of India’s 78th Independence Day, Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message.
A transcript of the letter follows.
On the auspicious occasion of her 78th Independence Day, I would like to offer my prayers, blessings, and appreciation to the nation of India, and all of her 1.3 billion children.
As Buddhists in general, we owe a debt of gratitude to this great land, for it was here that the teachings of Lord Buddha first originated.
As followers of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in particular, we feel a deep sense of appreciation towards India, as generations of practitioners have benefited immensely from this spirituality for more than 900 years.
To this very day the noble nation of India continues to offer us the timeless freedom and hospitality to continue our practice, and for this I offer my sincerest gratitude on behalf of the Karma Kagyu lineage, of which I am the head.
I therefore ask all of my students to keep India in their thoughts and hearts on this auspicious day, and to celebrate the spiritual wealth and beauty of this great nation and all of her children.
With prayers,
Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa
